Remove lime and water spots from leaves

Summary for the busy

To remove lime or water spots from the leaves of your houseplant, there are essentially 4 methods:

  • Rub leaves with half a lemon
  • Dilute citric acid or lemon juice with water and spray or wipe the plant
  • Rub leaves with the inside of a banana peel
  • Spray the plant with leaf shine spray

The simplest methods explained

1. Rub leaves with half a lemon

For this method, simply halve a lemon and rub the leaves with the spots with it. The citric acid ensures that the lime dissolves and the leaves shine afterwards.

2. Dilute citric acid or lemon juice with water and spray or wipe the plant

To use citric acid to remove the deposits, you do not necessarily need to have a lemon ready. You can also buy citric acid in concentrated form in a supermarket or drugstore. Dilute the citric acid with water to a 5-10% solution. You can then wipe the leaves with the solution. Unlike with pure water, the spots now disappear and your leaves shine again.

3. Rub leaves with the inside of a banana peel

For this method you need a banana peel. You can use the inside of the peel to wipe the leaves and the water spots disappear. Note, however, that the banana peel must still be quite fresh for this method to work. If the peel is already too dry, it does not absorb the minerals.

4. Spray the plant with leaf shine spray

The most professional, but by far the most expensive method is to use leaf shine spray. You can buy this online or in a plant specialty store and it is specially developed for this purpose. The spray also adds a protective layer to the leaves so that deposits do not form again as quickly in the future and the leaves are additionally protected. A pleasant scent is also often added to these leaf shine sprays. In my opinion, however, such a spray is not necessarily needed to free the leaves of a plant from lime spots. But if you want particularly beautiful, well-groomed leaves, I can recommend this leaf shine spray.

How to prevent the formation of lime deposits and water spots on your plants

The deposits on the leaves are caused by the water you spray or water the plant with, containing various minerals like lime. While the water evaporates over time, this is not possible for the minerals it contains. They remain and show up as a white, dull layer or white edges on the leaves.

To prevent this, you should spray your plant with water that contains no or very few minerals like lime. The best water for this is rainwater. Alternatively, you can also buy distilled water in a supermarket or drugstore. This is not expensive and is perfect for ensuring that no water or lime spots form on the leaves of your plant.
