These are the best ways to store aloe vera leaves

We compare whether cut leaves or whole leaves keep longer and whether storage at room temperature, in the fridge or frozen is the best method.

Cut sheet vs. whole sheet

A cut aloe vera leaf has a large proportion of cut surfaces. These are susceptible to drying out and particularly susceptible to germs. However, if the aloe vera leaf remains in one whole piece with only one cut surface, the surface of the leaf is largely closed. In this way, the leaf's natural protective coating remains in place and protects it from drying out or contamination. It is best to store the aloe vera leaf whole. This way it only has one cut surface and therefore has the longest shelf life. However, the leaf is of course even better protected on the plant itself. Harvest the leaf as late as possible.

Store aloe vera leaf at room temperature, refrigerated or frozen?

The aloe vera leaf has the longest shelf life when frozen. Note, however, that the consistency of the aloe vera gel inside the leaf does not remain unchanged. Freezing often causes the gel to settle after thawing. However, you can simply mix it to create a homogeneous mass again. Unfortunately, you cannot restore the natural structure of the aloe vera gel.
The leaf has a shelf life of approx. 8 months.

The aloe vera leaf will keep for 4-8 weeks at room temperature. Initially store the leaf upright so that the yellow juice can run off.

It is best to store an aloe vera leaf in the fridge. Leave it upright with the cut side down so that the yellow juice drains off. Then cut off a piece of the aloe vera leaf and cover the new cut of the leaf with cling film.
The leaf will keep for approx. 8-12 weeks.
